Initally founded as a railroad terminus, the city soon attracted merchants and craftsmen, salesmen, land speculators, and opportunists. Banks, warehouses, sawmills, a fledgling textile industry, and ironworks soon followed. After the Battle of Atlanta had effectively destroyed most of the city's ante-bellum architecture, Atlanta was rebuilt in various Victorian styles popular in that era. Wealthy citizens built Victorian mansions along Washington and Peachtree Streets. The early commercial buildings and Victorian and post-Victorian homes built from the post-Civil War period to 1930 period give Atlanta its distinctive personality. A few pre-Civil War homes, churches, cemeteries and mills still exist in the Metropolitan Atlanta area. Atlanta is known worldwide for its parks, sports teams, shopping, museums, and entertainment. There is something in Atlanta for everyone, whether your interests are botanical gardens, a Civil War museum, aquariums, children's museums, performing and fine arts, zoos, or major league sports of all kinds. Atlanta also is home to 16 colleges and universities.
